Liberal International’s Human Rights Committee convened its second round of expert consultations on its newly developed Liberal Principles of Digitalisation and Human Rights.
These Principles were developed as part of an innovative LI campaign to raise awareness among its members of digital rights. This campaign was made possible with the support of Danish social liberal party Radikale Venstre.
LI HRC Chair Astrid Thors and Radikale Venstre member Charlotte Burgess heard from technical, legal, and policy experts Prachi Mishra of Young Leaders in Tech, Antara Vats of Observer Research Foundation, Sebastian Becker of European Digital Rights, and Nathalie Maréchal of Ranking Digital Rights.
Experts agreed that the Principles are an essential document toward guiding our liberal members across a comprehensive spectrum of digital issues. A human rights-based approach to digital policy and transformation is essential to protecting liberal and democratic values.
LI welcomed experts’ authoritative contributions and ended with a message of optimism and hope. As Nathalie Maréchal noted, claims that “we’ve already lost” the fight against governments and digital giants violating human rights is a disinformation tactic. “It’s important not to concede and keep fighting.”
