Liberal International mourns the passing of Emma Bonino, one of Italy’s great champions of freedom, human rights and European liberalism.
For more than five decades, Bonino stood at the forefront of the struggle for individual liberty and civil rights. From the campaign for women’s reproductive rights and the legalisation of abortion in Italy, to her tireless work against the death penalty, for human rights and for a more united Europe, she consistently challenged established power in defence of human dignity.
A leading figure of Italy’s Radical movement – part of the wider liberal family and formerly connected with Liberal International – Bonino brought an uncompromising liberal voice to Italian and European politics. She served as a Member of the European Parliament, European Commissioner and Italian Foreign Minister, while remaining throughout her life an activist prepared to fight for causes far beyond the boundaries of party politics.
Her courage, independence and commitment to freedom made her an icon of Italian liberalism and a respected voice internationally.
Liberal International extends its deepest condolences to her family, friends and colleagues, and to our liberal friends in Italy.
