Strasbourg 2009

The 181st Executive Committee Meeting of Liberal International, will serve as a replacement for the one scheduled for December 2008 in Bangkok, Thailand. The first Liberal International event of 2009 will be co-hosted by the ALDE group (LI full member) in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe. With the European Court for Human Rights in its framework, the Council of Europe is known as one the leading intergovernmental institutions in the world in the protection of democracy, the rule of law and human rights. The Congress took place on the 25th January 2009 in Strasbourg, France.

On the same day as the Executive Committee meeting, we are pleased to offer a conference on the current economic recession entitled “The impact of the Global Economic Crisis on Democracy and Human Rights”. Strasbourg 2009 will offer a unique opportunity for discussions about a very real situation that is affecting liberals around the world. The event will involve two panels debating the roots of the ongoing global economic crisis and recession, as well as the implications of the financial turmoil for the protection of human rights. The Human Rights Committee will discuss how democracy can be safeguarded in times of economic recession.
