In a written statement Liberal International, together with LI full member International Network of Liberal Women (INLW), has called on the 59th Session of the United Nations Commission on the Status of Women (UN CSW) to globalize the Istanbul Convention on Prevention and Elimination of Violence Against Women.
The CSW – a key organ of the United Nations responsible for promoting gender equality and advancement of women worldwide – received the statement, which calls on all United Nations member states to adopt national legislative measures against violence against women and girls. The statement is part of a wider campaign undertaken by LI Human Rights Committee which aims at realising a stronger international legislative framework on the advancement and promotion of women’s rights.
In the push for women’s empowerment and gender equality, Liberal International has teamed up with UN Watch to host a women’s rights debate within the side-lines of the 59th session of UN CSW next week. The panel will feature Viktoria Saxby, Policy Advisor on Women’s Rights for LI full member, Centerpartiet(Sweden) and Yaya Fanta Kaba Fofana, Director for Gender Equality in the Ivorian Ministry for Family, Women and Children from LI full member, RDR (Cote d’Ivoire).
The panel will highlight the necessary steps that liberals and international organisations around the world could take to overcome the current challenges to gender equality.
