The 170th Executive Committee Meeting of Liberal International will take place on 28-29 March 2003 at the Hyatt Regency Hotel, Place des Nations Unies, Casablanca, Morocco.
This meeting comes at a timely moment in Moroccan political history. The Parliamentary elections of September 2002 are believed to have marked a turning point in Moroccan democracy, with the introduction of new laws, a new voting system and an increase in women’s parliamentary representation. At international level, Morocco maintains a unique position, as an essentially Islamic Arab state but with deep roots in the Western world in social, economic and political terms.
In this setting the Executive will discuss the Theme report for the 2003 Congress by the working title: “Islam and the West: the Liberal View”. In addition to this, a number of meetings will take place at the fringe of the Executive. In particular, the Committee on UN Reform will present a report on its work for discussion and a Round Table debate will focus on Africa’s sustainability.
