Meeting virtually on a monthly basis, the bureau of Liberal International set out during its last bureau’s meeting, its objectives for the coming months. The bureau marked the historic partnership between Liberal International’s human rights and climate justice committees and the ALDE Party Group in the Parliamentary Assembly in the Council of Europe, which is set to launch a new campaign to promote climate as a human rights issue with the objective to introduce the rights to safe environment in the human rights convention.

Top of the agenda is planning for the Liberal International statutory event set to take place in October 2021. After many months of careful monitoring of international events, including those of our partners, and amidst the imbalance of the pandemic recovery, the bureau has taken the difficult decision to postpone the 63rd congress. Instead, a virtual 204th Executive Committee meeting will be convened to ensure that new member parties are able to present their applications and that policy can be discussed. After a period of initial consultation, the LI Fair Trade Working Group has edged closer to finalising its inaugural trade dossier ahead of consultation with the LI membership during October’s 204th executive committee meeting.

The bureau also set in motion plans for LI’s 75th Anniversary Congress which is set to take place in 2022. The celebration will be marked with the publication of an updated history of Liberal International that charts the intellectual as well as institutional development of international liberalism since 1947.

Although the pandemic continues to disrupt high-level global events, LI is deep into planning for its engagement at the United Nations Climate Change Conference, COP26, which takes place in Glasgow in November 2021.
