Liberal International’s Human Rights Committee is following with concern the ongoing developments in New Delhi, where members and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), India’s youth-led anti-incumbency movement, had organised a march to Parliament calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the NEET examination paper leak, which affected more than two million students, and broader concerns over accountability in the education system.

Reports indicate that Indian authorities have used force against peaceful demonstrators and detained several students and activists. While CJP representatives have reportedly met with government officials for dialogue, reports of continued police action against protesters remain concerning. LI HRC unequivocally rejects the use of violence against individuals exercising their right to peaceful assembly

Peaceful protest is a fundamental democratic freedom and an essential means through which citizens can raise matters of public interest. Liberal International calls on all parties to exercise restraint and engage in meaningful dialogue. As a current member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, India has committed itself to upholding human rights, including the rights to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and democratic participation. We therefore urge the Government of India to respect these rights, release those detained solely for peacefully exercising them, and pursue a constructive resolution through dialogue.
