Liberal International mourns the passing of Sidya Touré, former Prime Minister of Guinea and leader of UFR

Liberal International mourns the passing of H.E. Sidya Touré, former Prime Minister of Guinea and leader of the Union of Republican Forces (UFR), LI’s member party.

A distinguished statesman, accomplished technocrat and committed liberal, Sidya Touré dedicated his life to public service, democratic values and strengthening ties between Guinea, Africa and Europe. His political career spanned Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea, where he served in senior government positions, including as Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara under President Félix Houphouët-Boigny, before becoming Prime Minister of Guinea.

As leader of UFR, Touré was an important voice within the African liberal movement. His commitment to liberal principles, regional cooperation and the next generation of African leaders leaves an enduring legacy.

A tribute from Sidi Tiémoko Touré, Vice President of Liberal International

“It is with profound sadness that I learned of the passing of Sidya Touré, former Prime Minister of Guinea, on September 25th in Paris.

A statesman, a brilliant technocrat, and Chief of Staff to Prime Minister Alassane Ouattara under President Houphouët-Boigny, he left his mark on the history of Côte d’Ivoire and Guinea.

During our last meeting on March 30, 2026, at his residence in exile in Abidjan, I was enriched by the conversations of this committed and optimistic liberal humanist, who was nonetheless concerned about current events in his country of origin.

His faith in the ability of the younger generation to meet the multifaceted challenges facing all the countries of the sub-region shone through behind the affability of his infectious smile.

My condolences to his family, to the African and international liberal community, to his friends, including President Alassane Ouattara, and to the brotherly people of Guinea. Rest in peace, ‘Uncle.’”
