The Fair Trade Committee of Liberal International welcomes the decision of the United States Supreme Court to reject President Donald Trump’s sweeping emergency-based tariffs. The ruling restores a key safeguard by affirming that broad unilateral duties cannot be imposed without clear constitutional authority by the United States Congress. 

The Committee views this decision as a positive step toward protecting people from economic shocks. Upholding constitutional limits strengthens democratic oversight and supports economic stability for the people and small companies most affected. 

We affirm that the legal authority must be clear and accountable when policies impact the price of goods and people’s financial security. “The tariffs imposed burdens on importers and consumers, and the restoration of proper legal process is essential for fair and predictable economic policy. The erratic tariffs contribute to uncertainty, disrupting supply chains and straining cooperation between longtime partner nations. A rules-based trading system requires consistent and lawful decisions, especially from the world’s largest economy.” remarked Chair of the LI Fair Trade Committee Francisco Winter.

The Committee is deeply concerned by President Trump’s retaliatory response, including his introduction of a new temporary 10 percent global tariff under a different statute. This action moves the US further away from responsible economic policy and does not serve the welfare of the people most directly affected. 

The Fair Trade Committee calls on the United States executive branch to respect the ruling; the separation of powers and ensure that future trade decisions rest on sound legal authority. We urge the US Congress to support evidence-based policymaking that protects people’s livelihoods and maintains democratic accountability.
