Acting upon the news that the President of Guinea, Alpha Condé, plans to hold the delayed and controversial referendum to amend the constitution at the height of a pandemic, LI President Hakima el Haite has insisted that Alpha Conde, Guinea’s president, must not be allowed to exploit the deadly Coronavirus pandemic for his own political ends.
“With many countries around the world taking urgent action to limit the devastating spread of COVID-19 – from delaying elections to closing places of worship – president Conde must realise that now is not the time to hold an unwanted referendum to illegitimately secure a third term in power”, said the LI president.
“Liberal International urges president Conde to prioritise the health of his people and comply with WHO guidelines. At this time, any president’s top priority must be to secure the well-being of his or her people, in this case by staying at home”, her statement concluded.
Earlier, LI Vice President, Cellou Dalein Diallo, former prime minister of Guinea and leader of the Opposition labelled President Conde “inhuman” for his decision to proceed with the ballot.
