Liberal International strongly condemns the violent anti-immigration demonstration that erupted in The Hague on 20 September, during which the headquarters of D66, our full member party in the Netherlands, was damaged. We stand in full solidarity with D66, and with our membership everywhere, against all such attacks.

This is not an isolated occurrence. Similar far-right mobilisations, often under the guise of “anti-immigration” or “housing policy” grievances, have increasingly sought to disrupt public order in major cities across the EU. The use of symbolic flags, incendiary rhetoric, and coordinated escalation reflects a trend of growing far-right presence not just in assemblies, but on the streets, with escalation towards intimidation and violence. We see in this a threat to democratic norms, to tolerance, and to the rule of law.

Liberal International calls on the authorities in the Netherlands to conduct a full, transparent investigation into the vandalism, violence, and damages, ensuring accountability for those responsible. We also urge political actors and civil society across Europe to speak out swiftly and clearly against such violent expressions of hatred and extremism. To all our member parties, including D66, know that you have our full support and solidarity as you work to protect democratic values in these difficult circumstances.

We reaffirm our commitment to a Europe rooted in pluralism, respect, and freedom. Far-right violence has no place in it.
