Excellent results for LI member parties in Finland’s first ever County Council elections

On 23 January, Finland held its first ever County Council elections to elect assembly members for regional councils which in the future (instead of the municipalities) will organise social and health care, as well as emergency services.

LI full member party Suomen Keskusta achieved an excellent election result, winning 19.2% of the votes nationally, returning the party to the top three leading parties in Finland. Of the 21 future County Councils, Keskusta will be the leading party in 9 County Councils.

LI’s other full member party Svenska folkpartiet I Finland (SFP) also achieved a good result with 4.9% of the votes nationally. SFP will be the biggest party in 2 of the County Councils, and is also the only party that received an absolute majority in a region (Pohjanmaa, with 50,2% of the votes).

The County Council elections were held as a result of the national Social Welfare and Health Care Reform. The elections were held in the entire country, except for in the capital Helsinki and the autonomous archipelago of Åland, which will continue providing social and healthcare services as before.

Liberal International bureau strongly condemns President Daniel Ortega's declaration that there will be "no more elections" for Nicaragua's democratic opposition and the legislative measures that would effectively abolish meaningful democratic elections in the country. Together, these actions make clear the Ortega-Murillo regime's intention to extinguish any remaining prospect of a peaceful democratic transition and entrench one-party authoritarian rule, moving Nicaragua closer to the model of a single-party state such as Cuba.

Liberal International's Human Rights Committee is following with concern the ongoing developments in New Delhi, where members and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), India's youth-led anti-incumbency movement, have organised a march to Parliament calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the NEET examination paper leak, which affected more than two million students, and broader concerns over accountability in the education system.
