In the presence of ministers, parliamentarians, and members of the international liberal family, Lord John Alderdice will be presented with the 2015 Liberal International Prize for Freedom during the 194th Executive Committee meeting, which convenes in Zurich between 12-14 June.
Nominated for the 2015 Prize by the German Group of Liberal International (GGLI – LI full member), Lord Alderdice is to be recognised by liberals worldwide for the instrumental role he plays in promoting peace, democracy, and human rights on an international scale.
The nominating citation from GGLI praises a liberal who, “as one of the chief negotiators of the Good Friday Agreement signed in 1998, delivered a historic masterpiece in politics which has been a focal point in the peace process in Northern Ireland.”
Lord Alderdice “has been considerably involved in peace missions in Peru, the Far East, and Southern Africa.” – GGLI
Lord Alderdice was elected three times as President of Liberal International, has previously served as convenor of the Liberal Democrats group (LI full member) in the United Kingdom’s House of Lords, and today continues his international peacebuilding work as the Director of the Centre for the Resolution of Intractable Conflict (CRIC) at Oxford University, UK.
The Prize for Freedom ceremony will form part of the 194th Executive Committee meeting of Liberal International in Zurich, Switzerland. Government ministers, liberal parliamentarians, human rights activists, and business people from six regions of the world will come together to develop LI’s year-long reflection on liberalism, under the theme ‘Liberalism: Visions for our Future.’

The Prize for Freedom is awarded annually to an individual who has made an exceptional contribution to the advancement of human rights and political freedoms.
