HE President Macky Sall joins revered league of liberals; awarded Hans van Baalen Medal of Liberalism in Dakar ceremony

In the presence of more than 100 liberal parliamentarians and party representatives spanning Africa and Europe, the President of Senegal, HE Macky Sall, has been presented with the Hans van Baalen Medal of Liberalism in recognition of his unyielding support for liberalism in Senegal, Africa, and around the world.

At a ceremony in the presidential palace on 5 December, LI President Hakima el Haite, presented President Sall with the award, conferred to only the most outstanding liberals. Under the leadership of President Sall, Senegal has seen good economic growth leading to improved living conditions and political stability in an era of coups across the ECOWAS states. As the leader of LI full member, APR, he has taken a lead in supporting liberal parties and liberalism globally.

Other recipients of the Medal include former Prime Minister Xavier Bettel and HRH King Simeon II among others.

Liberal International bureau strongly condemns President Daniel Ortega's declaration that there will be "no more elections" for Nicaragua's democratic opposition and the legislative measures that would effectively abolish meaningful democratic elections in the country. Together, these actions make clear the Ortega-Murillo regime's intention to extinguish any remaining prospect of a peaceful democratic transition and entrench one-party authoritarian rule, moving Nicaragua closer to the model of a single-party state such as Cuba.

Liberal International's Human Rights Committee is following with concern the ongoing developments in New Delhi, where members and supporters of the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), India's youth-led anti-incumbency movement, have organised a march to Parliament calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan following the NEET examination paper leak, which affected more than two million students, and broader concerns over accountability in the education system.
