Resolution number: 02
Title:
The Executive Committee of Liberal International, convened in Zurich, Switzerland, on 12 June 2015
Recognising that Anwar Ibrahim led the opposition coalition to an unprecedented electoral success in Malaysia’s general elections in 2013, winning 51% of the popular vote,
Recalling that Anwar Ibrahim has been subjected to 17 years of relentless government harassment, intimidation and politically motivated persecution, since the ruling party removed him as Deputy Prime Minister in 1998,
Recalling that on 10 February 2015, Anwar Ibrahim was unjustly imprisoned for five years on politically motivated criminal charges,
Aligning itself with LI’s Presidential Statement[1];
Believing that Anwar Ibrahim’s conviction and imprisonment were the outcome of continuous politically motivated attempts to damage his career and deprive Malaysia’s opposition of its democratically elected parliamentary leader,
Noting that on 30 April 2015, in a final attempt to free Anwar Ibrahim, an application for judicial review to set aside his conviction on grounds of unfairness, was filed in Malaysia’s Federal Court,
Expresses concern at Anwar Ibrahim’s deteriorating health in prison and government delays in providing medical care for his declining condition,
Condemns the politically motivated persecution of Anwar Ibrahim, that led to his unjust imprisoned for five years on the basis of trumped up criminal charges, and;
Calls for his immediate and unconditional release from prison.
