Title:
Putting an end to the injustice of Guantanamo
The Executive Committee of Liberal International, convened in Zurich, Switzerland, on 12 June 2015
Considering that
- for liberals it is unacceptable that someone should be in detention without proper trial;
- anyone who has not been proven guilty of any crime should be released immediately;
Noting that
- 57 detainees are currently held in Guantanamo Bay while having been acquitted of criminal charges;
- These detainees cannot resettle in the United States nor in their states of origin;
- The US government is requesting third states to assist in a finding a solution for these detainees;
Observing that
- The Obama administration on 4 June disclosed new plans to close the facility at Guantanamo ;
- The window of opportunity for a solution is rapidly closing as US Congress is currently preparing legislation that would forbid the resettlement of these detainees not only in the USA but in third states as well;
Urges
- All governments concerned to welcome the resettlement of some of the 57 Guantanamo detainees in their respective countries and bring forward the overdue closure of the detention centre.
