Title:
The Executive Committee of Liberal International, convened in Tbilisi, Georgia, on 21 May 2016
Taking note that on the 3rd August 2016 South Africa will hold landmark local government elections;
Acknowledging that the Democratic Alliance will be contesting this elections with specific objectives of retaining the City of Cape Town and challenging for power in the City of Tshwane, the City of Johannesburg and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality;
Recognising that the public protector of South Africa has released a damning report on the abuse of state resources by the ruling party to win votes;
Further recognising the inability of the Independent Electoral Commission of South Africa to ensure free and fair elections by not providing political parties contesting elections with a credible voters roll with registered voter’s addresses hence being unable to comply with the electoral act section16.3 for the last 13 years;
Calling on Liberal International to show solidarity and to support democratic governance across the globe with the view of ensuring and safeguarding the existence of liberal governments;
Expresses concern over the abuse of state resources by the ruling party to win votes and the Independent Electoral Commission’s inability to ensure free and fair elections in South Africa;
Urges the Liberal International Executive Committee to consider sending an election observer mission to South Africa to observe the local government elections scheduled for the 3rd August 2016.
