Resolution on Venezuela
By the Catalan Group of Liberal International
During the next months a new electoral process will be developed in the Bolivian Republic of Venezuela. This time the process will bring a reform of the Constitution. If approved, this reform will modify the concepts and fundamental principles of the Constitution, including the very structure of the Venezuelan State, and turn it into a “Socialist State”. The most damaging aspects of the proposal are the following ones:
- Increase of power held by the President of the Republic of Venezuela.
- Alarming modification of the territorial, political, administrative, economic, and social structure of the state.
- Great institutionalization of the ideological and military power of the State, to be used by the President at his discretion.
- An irregular and distrusted electoral system.
For this reason the Liberal International:
- Demands the Government of Venezuela to make all constitutional reforms compatible with democratic values, principles and guarantees and to cease the violation of Human Rights in any case.
- Demands the Government of Venezuela to observe the universal principle of Freedom of Vote.
- Demands the appropriate international bodies to observe civil liberties and human rights, with special emphasis on the freedom to vote in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.
