Resolution on the Hindu-Muslim Conflict in India
As adopted by the Congress of Liberal International, Budapest, Hungary 21-23 March 2002
The Liberal International Congress;
a. Shocked by the recent unfortunate events in Gujarat, India between Hindus and Muslims that have left over 500 dead and many injured.
b. Bearing in mind that this conflict between Hindus and Muslims has been exacerbated because Hindus and Muslims regard the disputed site at Ayodhya as sacred to their faith;
1. Stresses the need to bring to justice all those responsible for acts of incitement or violence upon people of any religion in the present crisis;
2. Hopes that constructive ways of ending the cycle of rivalry over the disputed site of Ayodhya can be found. For example establishing at the site a centre for the study of religion and the promotion of religious harmony that would benefit not only India but the world at large.
3. Points out that the maintenance of a secular state is vital to the well being of democracy, especially the world largest democracy where the 140 million Muslims constitute the largest minority in the world.
