Resolution on China
1. Considering the recent:
crackdown on setting up the China Democratic Party and the sentencing of Xu Wenli, Wang Youcai and Qin Yongmin to 11-13 years in prison without due legal procedure;
sentencing of labour activist Zhang Shanguang to 10 years in prison for speaking about farmers’ protests to foreign media;
sentencing the businessman Lin Hai to 2 years in prison for providing e-mail addresses in China to a dissident magazine;
increased restrictions on publishing printed materials;
intrusion by PRC in the autonomy of the legal institutions of Hong Kong on the right of abode;
intensified repression of minorities in Xinjiang and Tibet as well as of growing Christian and other religious groups;
Chinese veto on the UN preventive peacekeeping mission in Macedonia.
2. The LI Congress urges:
democratic states to use all instruments available such as the UN Covenants and the UN Commission on Human Rights to increase efforts for democracy and respect for human rights as well as for minorities in China;
the PRC to withdraw its veto against a continued UNPREDEP* in Macedonia.
