The LI Human Rights Committee will hold its second annual meeting of Liberal Parliamentarians working on Human Rights issues at the United Nations Human Rights Council headquarters on 12 June, which will coincide with the 26th Session of the Council. The Network of Liberal Parliamentarians allows for member parties of LI to nominate a Member of Parliament who is prepared to be active in LI’s Human Rights Campaigns and related activities. The network is a fundamental tool for the work of the LI HRC as often LI members raise the same human rights concerns in their respective parliaments without having knowledge of the work already done by their fellow liberal colleagues around the world. The objective of the meeting is to provide liberal parliamentarians with effective answers to the challenges posed by migration in a way that enjoys public support while countering the far-right populist rhetoric on the issue.
Panel: Migration and Human Rights: Strengthening Economic, Social and Conflict-Driven Migration Policies
In light of the recent tragedies which have occurred off of Mediterranean shores, the on-going humanitarian disaster facing Syrian refugees, and the tragedy of the conflicts in Eastern DR Congo and CAR, there is no better time or place to revisit migration policies. The panel will allow for liberal parliamentarians to debate the strengthening of migration policies at a time when migration has become a contentious issue in many parts of the world.
