Dear High Commissioner,
We are very concerned by the rise of tension and sporadic violence in relation to the election campaign in Zanzibar, in advance of the elections on 30 October 2005.
Liberal International will be observing the situation closely to see whether the elections meet international standards. It would be extremely regrettable if the election was marred by irregularities, voter intimidation, and politically motivated violence as in the earlier elections of 1995 and 2000, as reported by EU Election Monitors and Amnesty International.
We believe that free, fair and peaceful elections in Zanzibar are crucial for the maintenance of peace and stability in both Tanzania and Zanzibar, and respectfully request that the Government do all in its power to facilitate this.

The Swedish Government, as well as members of parliament and the European Parliament will be observing the situation closely to see whether the elections meet international standards. It would be extremely regrettable if the election was marked by irregularities, voter intimidation, and politically motivated violence as in the earlier elections of 1995 and 2000, as reported by EU Election Monitors and Amnesty International.

To ask Her Majesty’s Government what they are in support of free, fair and peaceful elections in Zanzibar and Tanzania on 30 October 2005.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what representations they are making to the government of Tanzania to ensure free and fair elections on 30 October 2005 and to avoid a repeat of the elections of 1995 and 2000 which failed to meet international election standards.
To ask Her Majesty’s Government what representations they have made to the government of Tanzania about the recent reports of violence and intimidation of opposition parties in Zanzibar in the run up to the elections on 30 October 2005.
Concerning the elections in Zanzibar and Tanzania on the 30 October 2005 I am wondering what measures the Commission is ready to take in order to contribute to support free, fair and peaceful elections? Has the Commission urged the governments of Zanzibar and Tanzania to ensure free and fair elections, and to avoid a repeat of the elections of 1995 and 2000 which failed to meet international election standards? How does the Commission intend to assist Tanzania and Zanzibar to achieve free, fair and peaceful elections in order to maintain peace and stability in the region?
