Statement of the LI President on the local elections in Zimbabwe

In advance of local elections in Zimbabwe and the ongoing lack of democracy and intimidation of the opposition in that country, Annemie Netys Uyttebroeck, speaking at the Executive meeting of Liberal International in Gibraltar said:

“The ongoing intimidation of opposition Movement for Democratic Change candidates and supporters in advance of the local elections this weekend, provides further example of the determination of the regime of Robert Mugabe to destroy any remnants of democracy in Zimbabwe.

Unnecessary obstacles placed in front of opposition candidates shows that the people of Zimbabwe are to be allowed no choice in who governs them locally, let alone nationally.

This is merely the latest stage in a campaign by Robert Mugabe to deny Zimbabweans of their rights- liberal democrats around the world must now turn words into action for the benefit of the people of Zimbabwe.”
