Statement of the LI President on Cote d’Ivoire

Speaking at the Executive meeting of Liberal International in Gibraltar, September 27/28th 2002, President Annemie Neyts-Uyttebroeck said:

“The current crisis in Cote D’Ivoire comes at a crucial moment, when the political parties had begun the process towards peace and democracy.

Our liberal colleagues in Cote D’Ivoire are currently in hiding in fear of their lives- our thoughts are with them and their families and supporters. But our action must be in ensuring that military personnel and forces remain outwith the political sphere, allowing the people of Cote D’Ivoire to choose their leaders and representatives democratically,  acting only to guarantee the safety of those representatives and democratic institutions.”
