Resolution on Human Rights in Belarus
Proposed by: FDP (Germany), German Group of Liberal International,
The 188th LI Executive Committee meeting:
- strongly condemns the executions of Dmitry Konovalov and Vladislav Kovalyov. LI has serious doubts about the respect of human rights standards and fairness of their trial.
- recalls the 50th Congress (2000) “Death Penalty” resolution and is vehemently opposed to capital punishment. This case is another argument for the abolishment of this cruel and inhuman practice,
- calls on the Belarus Government to declare a moratorium on capital punishment, with the goal of eliminating it completely. Belarus is the only country in Europe practicing this unacceptable form of punishment.
- is deeply concerned about the continuous deterioration of the human rights situation in Belarus. The violent repressions of political protests, detention of political prisoners including presidential candidates and prominent human rights defenders, and the recent informal travel bans for civic activists and opponents of the regime are just the tip of the iceberg.
- calls on the EU to include a clause in the co-operation agreements with the “Eastern Partnership” countries and Russia to follow the EU policies on Belarus with regards to human rights
- calls on the International Ice Hockey Federation to suspend the 2014 World Ice Hockey Championship in Minsk.
