Morocco 9 November, 2006Â – The world network of liberal and democratic parties declared that democracy in East Europe is gaining momentum. However, grave concerns are raised over the nationalistic tendencies emerging from Slovak National Party (SNS) in the aftermath of the elections in Slovakia. Their invitation to join in a coalition government, by Prime Minster Robert Fico, raises fears that the government is legitimising SNS’ aggression against minorities in that country.
The Resolution condemns the abuse of minorities by political parties, and calls on Prime Minister Robert Fico to disassociate himself from statements uttered by Jan Slota, the SNS leader.
It further calls on the Slovakian government to ensure an open democratic climate in accordance to EU values. It calls on member states of the EU to reject human rights violations of every kind, especially if they come from governments or political parties, as is the case in Slovakia.
The Resolution states:
‘We call on the European Union, the Council of Europe and the OSCE to monitor the adherence of political and human rights of these minority groups, with special regards to the ethnic minorities including Hungarians, Roma and those of other minorities such as sexual minorities.’
The Congress acknowledged the reforms made by the former Slovakian government, which transformed that country into a leading economy within the 10 new members of the European Union.
