NOTES that the rise of right-wing populist and authoritarian political movements across the world is leading to resistance against progressive climate action and the regression in environmental efforts.

RECOGNISES that the rhetoric often used by right-wing populist frames climate action as an elitist agenda that threatens national sovereignty, personal freedoms and economic stability. This narrative appeals to voters concerned about the economic costs of transitioning to green energy, especially in times of financial uncertainty.

OBSERVES that these parties have given rise to a new wave of climate change scepticism. Instead of denying the existence of climate change completely, this new form of climate scepticism focuses on purported reasons to delay the transition away from fossil fuels for as long as possible, questioning scientific consensus or citing cost burden to local economies and potential impacts on traditional industries, cost of living and GDP.

FURTHER NOTES that these trends highlight a growing polarization in climate politics and result in policy drifts, where previously established climate commitments are weakened or reversed.

ACKNOWLEDGES that while the transition to a decarbonised economy poses governance challenges and faces significant public concerns and opposition in particular from oil industry and interest groups, a bold political response must prioritise cutting emissions and investing in climate adaptation measures.

RESOLVES THAT with average global temperatures rising at an alarming rate and the frequency and intensity of natural disasters increasing every day, Liberal International will continue to focus on speeding up the global response to climate change whilst working to develop partnerships to address the barriers to progress, both in the developing world and elsewhere.
