Urgency resolution: Urging for the rejection of discourses that degrade Human Rights - Online 2021

Submitted by: Partido Liberal de Chile

The LI Executive Committee:

  1. Expresses its concern about the recent violent attacks on Venezuelan immigrants (seeking shelter from the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro) in northern Chile. The attacks[1] are the result of a discourse that weakens Human Rights, xenophobia and the baseless conviction that there is a link between immigration and crime rates.
  2. Is specifically concerned about the fact that, although the attacks were transversally condemned by Chilean civil society, they were not denounced by all Chilean political actors; some of whom even incited the attacks through human rights degrading discourses, while others choose to remain silent.
  3. Recognizes that Human Rights violations occur in environments in which Human Rights are not properly protected and defended by political actors.

The Executive Committee:

  1. Rejects the violent attacks in Chile on Venezuelan refugees fleeing from Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship.
  2. Recognizes that Human Rights violations find their origin – among other causes – in political discourses that undermine and degrade human rights.
  3. Urges liberal parties worldwide to denounce the practice of undermining and weakening Human Rights
