The LI Executive Committee:
- Expresses its concern about the recent violent attacks on Venezuelan immigrants (seeking shelter from the dictatorship of Nicolas Maduro) in northern Chile. The attacks[1] are the result of a discourse that weakens Human Rights, xenophobia and the baseless conviction that there is a link between immigration and crime rates.
- Is specifically concerned about the fact that, although the attacks were transversally condemned by Chilean civil society, they were not denounced by all Chilean political actors; some of whom even incited the attacks through human rights degrading discourses, while others choose to remain silent.
- Recognizes that Human Rights violations occur in environments in which Human Rights are not properly protected and defended by political actors.
The Executive Committee:
- Rejects the violent attacks in Chile on Venezuelan refugees fleeing from Nicolas Maduro’s dictatorship.
- Recognizes that Human Rights violations find their origin – among other causes – in political discourses that undermine and degrade human rights.
- Urges liberal parties worldwide to denounce the practice of undermining and weakening Human Rights
