It is with increased worry we are observing the tensions at the border between Serbia and Kosovo. Issues with something as trivial as license-plates has escalated to a situation that threatens the stability in the area and beyond.

Noting that
Kosovo has a population of 1.8 million, the majority of whom are ethnically Albanian

Further noting that
Kosovo’s independence is recognized by 110 countries — including 22 EU countries, but not by Serbia and Russia.

Further noting that
The European Commission has urged both Kosovo and Serbia to exercise restraint and promote freedom of movement

Liberal International calls on
All parties to work towards de-escalation and respecting the free movement of people in the volatile border region and urges all parties to work together for stability and peace.
