Liberal International is alarmed at the evidence presented by the Working Group I to the Sixth Assessment Report compiled by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change issued on the 9th of August.
Noting that
- Global heating is affecting every region on Earth, with many of the changes becoming irreversible
- Human activity plays a role in driving extreme weather events with more accuracy and certainty than ever before
- Conserving and restoring nature is a powerful tool to remove carbon from our atmosphere, but it is not enough unless we also dramatically reduce our emissions
Expressing deep concern
- That the internationally agreed threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius is dangerously close
- At the lack of political will, adaptation and resilience finance, and urgency towards implementation of the Paris Agreement, especially delivering a carbon mechanism (Article 6)
Urging
- All international stakeholders to increase ambitions through their NDCs that recognise the urgency of the preliminary results of the IPCC report
- The UK Presidency to deliver an inclusive, safe and ambitious COP26 in light of the pandemic restrictions which includes binding, measurable outcomes
