Noting the IPCC Synthesis Report (AR6) approved on 20th March 2023 concluded that:
- Global surface temperatures in the decade 2011-20 had reached 1.1 degrees C above the base level of 1850-1900 and that the cause was human activity.
- Climate damage is hitting harder and sooner than expected and the global temperature will continue rising until CO2 emissions reach net zero.
- Both more ambitious and more urgent action is necessary to secure a sustainable and liveable future for all.
- Vulnerable communities that have historically contributed least to climate change are disproportionately affected.
- Current Nationally Determined Contributions are insufficient to limit the global temperature rise to 1.5 degrees C this century.
Believes that:
- Climate action that prioritises equity, climate justice, social justice and inclusion will engender popular support across all countries leading to more sustainable outcomes.
- Climate action that supports transformative change towards is necessary to foster climate resilient development in particular in developing countries.
Calls on:
- All UN member states to speed and scale on peaking their GHG emissions no later than 2025, without sacrificing a social justice perspective.
- Developed and middle-income countries to invest in effective climate action technologies and their transfer to the developing world.
