Liberal International condemns:
The violent deaths of hundreds, possibly thousands, of people, largely carried out by security services, during and after the elections in Tanzania on 29th October 2025:
The disqualification of the presidential candidates of the two largest opposition parties Tundu Lissu of Chadema and Luhaga Mpina of ALN member ACT Wazalendo:
The detention and torture of opposition politicians, journalists and civil society activists.
Notes that:
The internet shutdown coordinated by the Tanzanian authorities coincided with the killings, preventing online reporting of events and enabling perpetrators to hide evidence:
The African Union election observation mission stated that the election did not meet democratic principles or standards.
Civil society organisations in Tanzania are collating evidence to submit to the ICC, including against President Samia Hassan:
UN Human Rights Chief Volker Turk on November 11th called for an investigation into the election-related killings.

Non-recognition of the election result and for President Hassan to stand down and the elections re-run:
A full internal independent and transparent investigation in Tanzania of the deaths and the planning of the massacre, alongside an investigation by the United Nations Human Rights Council:
