Urgency resolution: on Covid and Polio Vaccines - Online 2021

Submitted by: Canadian Group of Liberal International (CGLI)

Noting that:
Vaccines have been vital to human health since the smallpox vaccine in 1796.
Many covid vaccines are highly effective;

60% of people in high income countries have received at least one dose, but only 1-2% in low-income countries.

Recognizing that:
The international campaign to eliminate polio has reduced new cases to just one in January 2021.
In the last two countries with cases of polio, Afghanistan and Pakistan, the Taliban have attacked polio vaccine teams, allowing polio to spread.
The polio vaccine campaign built a worldwide network of health professionals that could be valuable in other international vaccine campaigns.

Calls for:
Countries and international organizations to take urgent action to make covid vaccines available to all populations.
Countries and international organizations to deploy diplomatic efforts with the Taliban to finally eliminate polio from Afghanistan and Pakistan.
Countries and international organizations to promote as human rights:

  1. The right to public health measures that prevent disease spreading from one person to another, like the right to avoid personal injury.
  2. The right to prompt access to available vaccines against infectious diseases.
