Observing  

That following the electoral farce of November 2021 where Ortega reelected himself without any opposition, civic and political rights were suppressed and a permanent hate campaign against the Catholic Church began: numerous priests are now in prison including Monsignor Alvarez a Bishop, religious organizations have been shut down and members exiled, all religious activities are banned. 

Expressing Concern that 

In February 2023, the regime freed 222 political prisoners, deported them to the U.S.A. and stripped them of their Nicaraguan citizenship, among them all of the aspiring presidential candidates and opposition leaders who had been imprisoned since 2021. At the same time, they were named traitors to the Homeland and their belongings confiscated. In the following days, 94 political leaders, journalists and academics, were added to the list of traitors and the same sanctions applied to them as well. 

Condemns 

This new repressive escalation, in which Ortega´s regime continues violating human rights, all without precedence in recent history.  

Reaffirms 

Our solidarity with the Nicaraguan people, who live in fear of constant repression, and especially with the liberal family and the members of Citizens for Liberty, who represent values of freedom and democracy. 

Urgently Requests 

The cease of all forms of repression, the liberation of political prisoners who still remain in prison, among them Monsignor Alvarez, Bishop of Matagalpa, the restitution of political and civic rights to all citizens, and the safe return of all exiles to Nicaragua. 

Strongly demands 

The recovery of democracy and the implementation of necessary electoral reforms, as well as advanced free and fair elections.
