Observing
That on September 9th, Milagros Raquel González, youth leader and district president of Ciudadanos por la Libertad in Managua, was violently injured and arrested by a large contingent of police anti-riot forces, at the entrance of the Party’s National Headquarters, for the “crime” of waving the country’s national flag from her vehicle.
That as of July 2019, several members of Ciudadanos por la Libertad have received death threats and during this year alone, at least eleven members of this organisation from the northern and centre regions of the country have been killed in circumstances not yet clarified by the police.
Expressing Concern
For the restrictions against freedom of expression, against the right of peaceful political rallies, as well as for the violations of human rights, and lack of due process by law enforcement authorities in Nicaragua, which have been brutal since April 2018.
We Believe
That the repression and everyday risks and harassment suffered by members of the opposition, highlights the continuous and dire political crisis in Nicaragua, emphasised by the systematic violations of human rights.
We Condemn
The recent acts of repression, aggression, threats and the lack of guarantees to the security and physical integrity of the members of Ciudadanos por la Libertad in Nicaragua.
We Urgently Request
That the Nicaraguan government cease all forms of repression, and promote a peaceful and democratic solution to the national crisis, allowing the Nicaraguan people to express themselves through free, transparent and advanced elections.
That the international community, especially the Organization of the United Nations, the Organization of American States, the European Union and the member organisations of the Liberal International, follow up on the serious events that motivates this resolution and continue to demand the restoration of all constitutional rights in Nicaragua.
