Liberal International remains concerned about the recent military coups in West Africa and especially about the delay in the organization of the return to constitutional order by the juntas.
Liberal International deplores in particular the suspension of fundamental freedoms, the looting and judicial harassment of political leaders and civil society actors that followed the coups and the lack of clear perspectives on the duration of the transitions.
Liberal International calls on the ruling juntas in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso to restore fundamental freedoms, including freedom of assembly, association and demonstration, in accordance with their respective countries’ international commitments, and encourages them to organize inclusive, free and transparent elections as soon as possible.
It urges all Guinea’s partners, particularly the AU, the EU and the United Nations, to support ECOWAS in its efforts to compel the juntas to resort to dialogue in order to resolve internal differences and thus promote a speedy and peaceful return to constitutional order.
