Irene Wang has joined the Liberal International Secretariat as the Human Rights Programme Officer. She is assuming the role previously held by Mikaela Hellman.

As Human Rights Programme Officer, Irene will support the programmatic work of Liberal International’s human rights committee. Irene will, among other things, work on the committee’s three focus areas: women in politics, digitalisation, and defending the democratic space. In addition, she will support the activities of the Secretariat and promote Liberal International’s presence in the international human rights community.

Prior to joining Liberal International, Irene worked for the Canadian government in immigration policy and employment and social development. She has also conducted research under Cuso International, the African Court Research Initiative, and Global Mobility of Talent Research Group on developing initiatives for women’s economic empowerment in Asia, the strategy of the African Union in International Criminal Court proceedings, and regional barriers to migration, respectively. In 2019, she was selected as a Climate Ambassador for a grassroots advocacy campaign, where she endorsed carbon emissions reduction strategies.

Irene recently completed her Master’s degree in International Political Economy at the London School of Economics. She also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Global and International Studies, specialising in Global Politics and Economics, from Carleton University.
