Nicaragua
Eduardo Montealegre Rivas is a Nicaraguan businessman and politician who served as foreign minister (1999-2000) and minister of finance (2002-03). He was elected vice-president at LI’s 60th congress in Mexico City in 2015.
Taking a stand against corruption, Mr Montealegre left the ruling political alliance in Nicaragua in 2005 to compete in the 2006 presidential elections – in this contest against the socialist Sandinista Front he won the implicit support of the United States Ambassador.
A politically -motivated move saw the Nicaraguan Supreme Court removed Eduardo Montealegre as leader of the Opposition Partido Liberal Independiente just 5 months ahead of the election.
Mr Montealegre holds degrees from Brown University and Harvard University.
