Abir al-Sahlani is a Swedish politician and recently elected MEP, with a background in international development. She was elected as vice-president at LI’s 70th- anniversary congress in Andorra in 2017.
Between 2011-14, Ms Al-Sahlani was a Member of Parliament and, prior to this, served as one of the youngest members of the Härnösand municipality council. Iraqi by birth, she has worked extensively on reconstruction and democracy projects in Iraq.
In 2003 she returned to Iraq for four years, where she worked as Liaison officer for the Governing Council of Baghdad (2003-04), coordinating relations between the council and Iraqi ministries and successfully promoted the founding of a centre for democracy and a youth parliament. She has a Master’s degree in computer system science from Stockholm University.
