Liberated: Global liberal family celebrates release of Anwar Ibrahim

Our global liberal family is overwhelmed by the news that Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim – Malaysia’s former deputy prime minister and former leader of our member party People’s Justice Party (LI member, PKR – Malaysia) – has been pardoned by the king and released from prison today.

Mr Ibrahim described his release, which follows last week’s historic parliamentary election, as a “new beginning… a new chapter in our country.”

LI has been passionately outspoken since Mr Ibrahim was tried and imprisoned on various politically motivated charges over the past 20 years. We have proudly stood alongside his wife, deputy prime minister Dr Wan Azizah and daughter Nurul Izzah MP,  in consistently calling for his liberation at the highest levels of government and also at the United Nations Human Rights Council.

Mr Ibrahim is a symbol of the unifying powers of liberalism and Liberal International looks forward to celebrating with him soon as we continue our campaigns for the release of other imprisoned #liberals around the world including senator Leila de Lima, Kem Socha, Raif Badawi, and Ilham Tohti.

Sir Graham Watson hits back at UK government’s Brexit plan
The Battle of Brexit is about whether the British are indeed islanders, or merely the residents of a rock surrounded by water, writes LI Medal of Liberalism recipient, Sir Graham Watson.
De Lima set to receive LI’s top human rights award this month
A vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s so-called ‘war on drugs’ and a prisoner of conscience. Senator Leila de Lima was one of the first to be targeted by the hard-line Duterte government for her outspoken criticism of the president’s targeted campaign of violence, which has left thousands of mostly poor Filipinos dead. Imprisoned since February 2017, this month Liberal International will recognise her sacrifice with our highest human rights award, the Prize for Freedom.
