Liberals world-wide step up for gender equality to mark International Women’s Day

Liberals across five continents have joined together to deliver LI’s International Women’s Day message for 2016, which took place on 8thMarch. Galvanising support for gender equality in every part of the world, the video message emphasised the role of women in safeguarding democracy and promoting peace.

Supporting the United Nations-backed celebration, liberals recognise that there is still much to be done to tackle discrimination against women and Liberal International, the only political international with a dedicated human rights body, which prioritises women’s rights as one of its primary areas of work.

LI fights for women’s rights because today only 1 in 5 parliamentary seats around the world are held by women and only 19 out of 196 possible heads of state are women – this is just 7 more than 20 years ago and so there is much more work to be done. Help spread awareness by sharing the video below on you facebook and twitter pages.

Look out later this month for LI’s quarterly Human Rights Bulletin that, with contributions from prominent female liberals, will centre on the theme of women’s rights.
