Liberal International’s (LI) Bureau and Climate Justice Committee express our condolences to the victims of the devastating floods in Europe and China, and raging wildfires in North America, and show solidarity with all those who have suffered in the neighbouring regions.
We warn that the implications of climate change are already being felt around the world and will only worsen if urgent action to effectively reduce emissions is not immediately taken.
While it is difficult to link individual extreme events to climate change, today, scientists are explicitly warning that extreme weather events are intensified by its global warming effects.
The LI Climate Justice Committee has continuously warned that the pandemic must not be used as an excuse to sideline the battle against the effects of climate change and highlights the importance of including climate justice principles at the core of a carbon neutral and circular economic recovery in a post COVID-19 world.
LI’s Bureau and Climate Justice Committee call on politicians and scientists to work closer together to significantly reduce emissions, while better protecting people from the adverse effects of climate change already felt today. We urge leaders to enhance adaptive capacity and resilience and to reduce vulnerabilities to climate change worldwide.
