Liberal International hosted its flagship Isaiah Berlin Lecture at its headquarters in the National Liberal Club, London on 29 April with internationally acclaimed author, academic, and journalist Timothy Garton Ash, who delivered the lecture ‘the rise and faltering of a free Europe.’
Prof. Garton Ash, facilitated by LI Deputy President Prof. Dr. Karl-Heinz Paqué, explored Europe’s current state and the challenges it has encountered over the past decade and a half. These challenges included a financial crisis, security concerns, and the rise of populist movements that have gained traction and even won power.
During his lecture, Prof. Garton Ash emphasized the ongoing struggle for freedom, stating, “Freedom is not a process—freedom is always a struggle.” He urged the need to address economic and cultural inequalities to counter the waves of anti-liberal populism that have emerged in recent years. He highlighted the risks associated with democratic hubris since the fall of the Iron Curtain and cautioned against complacency, asserting that while Europe is currently the best it has ever been, the future is not guaranteed, adding, “there is nothing inevitable about what comes next.”
Prof. Garton Ash also called on liberals to lead the effort in defending a free Europe, encouraging them to be at the forefront of this struggle for democracy and freedom. His insights provided valuable lessons not only for Europe but also for every country and region facing similar challenges.
