Expressing the sense of the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan that the international community of nations and organisations should support Taiwan’s efforts to resist China’s territorial hegemony over the island as Taiwan prepares for its 1996 direct presidential election.
Whereas the Taiwanese people have expressed their desire to be masters of their own future by holding Taiwan’s first-ever direct Presidential election in 1996, ushering in a further step towards full democratisation of the Taiwanese society;
Whereas the Taiwanese people have made continuing efforts towards political reform and democratisation of the island’s government;
Whereas the Taiwanese people unequivocally reject China’s hegemony and strive to determine their own sovereignty over the future of Taiwan;
Whereas the People’s Republic of China continues to be hostile to the Taiwanese people’s efforts to determine their own future;
Whereas the People’s Republic of China has increasingly sought to isolate Taiwan in the international community of nations;
Whereas the People’s Republic of China has attempted to interfere with the democratisation of Taiwan;
Whereas the People’s Republic of China continues to seek hegemony over Taiwan and the Taiwanese people;
Whereas the People’s Republic of China has consistently threatened Taiwan’s independent sovereignty;
Whereas the Taiwanese people have stated that they wish to seek a peaceful resolution with China over China’s territorial claim over Taiwan;
Now, therefore, be it resolved that the Democratic Progressive Party of Taiwan seeks the support of the international community of nations and multilateral organisations in its efforts to resist and deny China’s attempts to interfere with Taiwan’s independent sovereignty and its 1996 direct presidential election.
