Marrakech, 11 November, 2006 – Liberal International, the world network of liberal and democratic parties, passed a resolution at their Congress, stating that the end of days for Fidel Castro is near. The resolution states that:
‘Political changes in Cuba will come given the wish of the Cuban people to fight for the democratisation of the country, a process which could be accelerated by the deterioration of the health of Fidel Castro.’
The resolution proposes that the experiences of the transition in Central and Eastern Europe after the fall of the Berlin Wall should be examined and adopted for Cuban democratisation.
It also called for democratic countries with the strong involvement of the European Union, in alliance with the Americas, to support Cuban democratisation.
The resolution further states:
‘The Congress is aware of the enormous challenges that Cuba will face during its transition to democracy, and noted the realisation of a market economy, civil liberties, human rights and freedom of speech in a multi-party democracy must be encouraged to take root.’
Liberal International also lamented the fact that Cubans have been deprived of such values under the communist regime, which has curtailed all freedoms of movement, association, or speech during Castro’s almost half a century rule.
