URGENCY RESOLUTION ON ECOWAS

Liberal International express its deep concern at the proliferation of military coups and restrictions on fundamental freedoms recently recorded in West Africa. In Guinea particularly, the military junta announced a ban on political protests from 13 May 2022, after announcing a three-year transition period. 

Liberal International invite the governing junta in Mali, Guinea and Burkina Faso to abide by the international commitments of their respective countries, in particular the freedoms of expression and demonstration, and to expedite the restoration of the constitutional order.   

Liberal International express its solidarity with the Presidents of LI full members UFDG and UFR, Cellou Dalein Diallo and Sidya Touré.  On 24 May 2022, a special court summoned Mr Diallo to appear in court without any specific grounds, a persistent judicial targeting of prominent political leaders that is of great concern.  Both leaders are victims of spoliation and judicial harassment with the ulterior objective of the junta in Guinea to exclude them from the next national elections.  

Liberal International urges ECOWAS, the AU and UN to exert further diplomatic and economic pressure on the juntas in these countries and to put in place, as soon as possible, legitimate institutions resulting from inclusive, free and transparent elections.
