‘Only President Yavlinsky and Yabloko can deliver a Russia that is a strong, engaged player on the world stage’

As Russians prepare to head to the polls to elect a new president on Sunday 18th March, the bureau of Liberal International has urged voters to back Dr Grigory Yavlinsky, endorsing the liberal leader as Russia’s best hope for a free future.

The Liberal International bureau said:

“As Russia enters the final days before electing a new president, the global liberal family stands resolutely behind Russia’s liberal leader Dr Grigory Yavlinsky, founder of our member party, Yabloko, as he leads the campaign for a free, open, Russia that offers opportunity for all.

“Vladimir Putin has presided over a Russian Federation that, we regret, has turned inwards and suffered as the democratic space has continued to shrink. Underpinned by liberal values Europe, and indeed the world, needs a Russia that is a strong, engaged, democratic player on the world stage and only President Yavlinsky and Yabloko are able to deliver this for the Russian people.”

Populist politicians around the world will go a long way to win votes. To the anguish of liberals, even politicians across the European Union have endorsed legislation that exploits, rather than assuages, the collective anxieties of voters - anxieties they have been recklessly nourished in the blinkered pursuit of power.

Being liberal entails a commitment to the right of each and every person to develop their life project in such a way that it allows them to achieve the greatest possible personal fulfillment, as long as in doing so one does not harm others. In contemporary Chilean society the conservative tradition is still very powerful and influential so putting our credo in to practice remains difficult – but Partido Liberal de Chile is up for that fight!
