LI ExCom registration open: Liberals to convene in DA-run Johannesburg to exchange better governance models

Twelve months after the Democratic Alliance (DA) won some of South Africa’s most important cities in nationwide local elections, Liberal International is proud to announce that the global federation of liberal and democratic political parties will convene its 199th Executive Committee meeting in DA-governed Johannesburg – the largest city in South Africa and one of the wealthiest cities on the continent. The ExCom will be held in partnership with the Friedrich Naumann Foundation (FNF) between 27-29th October 2017.

Drawing inspiration from best practice around the world, and in particular from the staggering success of the Democratic Alliance, the 199th Executive Committee of Liberal International will help equip delegates with the theoretical and practical knowledge to govern better, under the theme: Better Governance: Liberal answers to twenty-first century challenges.

Registration is now open via the LI website, where a programme and practical visits are detailed – please ensure that the guidelines are followed carefully.

The venue for the ExCom will be the Radisson Blu Gautrain. LI has arranged a special rate for delegates starting from €113 per night including breakfast and wifi access. LI member parties have been sent details of the process to reserve rooms and delegates must liaise directly with their international officer.

De Lima set to receive LI’s top human rights award this month

A vocal critic of President Rodrigo Duterte’s so-called ‘war on drugs’ and a prisoner of conscience. Senator Leila de Lima was one of the first to be targeted by the hard-line Duterte government for her outspoken criticism of the president’s targeted campaign of violence, which has left thousands of mostly poor Filipinos dead. Imprisoned since February 2017, this month Liberal International will recognise her sacrifice with our highest human rights award, the Prize for Freedom.
