In a joint statement commemorating International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia (IDAHOT), the Chair of LI LGBTI Rights Working Group Frank Van Dalen and the President of the International Federation of Liberal Youth (IFLRY, LI full-member), Ahmad Al Rachwani, have reiterated the continuous commitment of the global liberal family towards the promotion and advancement of LGBTI rights around the world.
“Liberal International will continue to fight for all those who want to be visible but can’t, for all those who want to openly love but can’t and for all those who want to express their identity but can’t. Being safe as an LGBTI-person is not something that should be granted by society. Society should be the one to protect all those who are negatively impacted by rejection and negative moral judgments because of who they are” said Van Dalen.

He warned that the struggle to achieve full equality is long from over as persons from the LGBTI-community get disowned by their families, bullied by peers or persecuted by the authorities on a daily basis. “Just this week we saw the second Pride Week in Lebanon cracked down by law enforcement. Something like this happened two years ago in Uganda during the fourth Pride Week and in Turkey where pride is now no longer being held. As we celebrate International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, we must remember that it is only by making homosexuality visible in society, that prejudice can be fought against.”
“Liberal International stands strong with the LGBTI-community not only today but every day. As chair of the LGBTI-workgroup of Liberal International, I will keep fighting until there are equal rights and safety for every LGBTI-person, where ever they may be in the world and I urge you to join me in this fight” he concluded.
It is on days like IDAHOT that we are reminded times and times again how important mutual collaboration across the global liberal family is in order to invoke positive change. Ahmad Al Rachwani, IFRLY President
Ahmad Al-Rachwani who was recently elected as IFLRY President echoed Van Dalen’s statement saying: “IFLRY will continue to support Liberal International and the important work of its Human Rights Committee on LGBTI rights. It is on days like IDAHOT that we are reminded times and times again how important mutual collaboration across the global liberal family is in order to invoke positive change.”
Liberal International and its Human Rights Committee have become the leading voice for LGBTI equality among the political internationals and have most recently committed its support to the global Pride movement.
